The Fault In Our Stars

Published June 22, 2014 by thatstrangegirls

Hey,

It was fathers day last week. However, due to a lack of money I decided to make him some chocolate cupcakes instead, and give him a card. My brother opted to just throw chocolate on top of them when the icing was done. However, the evening couldn’t have gone more wrong if it tried. We didn’t have any measuring cooking utensils so I estimated a lot of it, without being very sure. The mixture could have gone either way but actually ended up being completely fine. Once the cupcakes were in the oven we realised the freezer had been unplugged since the morning. As a family that are practically living off food in the freezer this was bad news. It also meant a lot of food that was no longer safe to eat had to be thrown away – hundreds of pounds worth. What could be saved had to be cooked really quickly.. but my cakes were already in the oven so there wasn’t much room to get it all done at once. This led to My nan, mother and I frantically trying to tidy up cupcake mixture, salvage food from the fridge and make sure said cupcakes didn’t burn all at once.

Once that was all under control, I set about making the icing. However the icing turned out ridiculously watery and unusable, so my nan had to sit there and pour almost two packets worth of icing sugar into this mixture to salvage it. Eventually the cupcakes were finished and decorated. The only issue was that now we had TOO MUCH icing. The cakes were practically drowning, there was too much to tip away down the sink and if we threw it outside, it’d attract rats. The only thing we could do was sit and try and eat it all to a level where we could throw it all away. This wasn’t practical my healthy eating plan but there wasn’t much else we could do.

So on Thursday, he and I went on our first date in a little while. We decided to go see TFIOS (in my defence it’s the first romance movie i’ve asked to see) and he agreed. We had a class first lesson so we went into school for that, then headed home to get changed and have some lunch.

Around half one we left to go get a bus into Worthing. The actual film wasn’t until half four, but we figured we’d have time to goof off in town for a bit. The bus took a little while to arrive but once it did arrive, we were swiftly on our way. There was a minor issue of the bus driver not having enough change to give me but that was resolved pretty quickly.

When we arrived in to town, the first thing we decided to do was go double check what time the movie was on – and it still was half four. By this point it was ten past two, so we still had a while yet. He went to a money machine to go get some money to pay for tickets and we went to I Love Candy to get two pints of Pick’n’mix sweets – one each. We agreed we’d buy sweets outside of the cinema to save money. We then went to WHSmiths to go buy a drink to stash (which we ended up drinking before the actual movie).

With plenty of time left, we headed to the beach. It was actually a really hot and beautiful day. He tried to teach me how to skip rocks but failed miserably. It was fun to watch him try and get the rocks to go further each time. We then sat on some rocks and just… talked. No stress of exams or school. (Well technically at this point I had two exams left and he had three but neither of us were particularly worried.)

We took pictures of each other – we planned to use it as a comparison picture of our faces before and after the movie that was supposedly going to make us cry. However we ended up just keeping the pictures and setting matching pictures of the other person as their background pictures.

After a while we decided to go venture into town to go explore a bit more and kill some time. The first shop we visited was CEX. We visited the shop for Him – he wanted some new games. However, I was the one who actually came out with a game as I found Scribblenauts on the DS which i’d been wanting for ages for only six pounds.

The next shop we visited was GAME – this time He came out victorious with three new games that individually cost twenty-ish pounds online. He got all three for less than thirty pounds… He was very pleased with himself. While waiting in line we looked at some of the silly little ‘on offer’ things in the basket such as stickers and key chains and agreed neither of us would realistically buy them. They were just fun to look at.

Next on our hit list was HMV. Not for any particular reason, we just wanted to go have a look around as sometimes they have interesting things there for really low prices. We looked at lots of different posters and talked about which ones we WOULD have up in our room (Sherlock, Doctor Who, Star Wars, Gamer related or The Hobbit posters) and which ones we WOULDN’T (Little Mix, One Direction, Football related, ETC). We also found all of the games we bought in the other shops for much higher prices – we were both very pleased about that. After poking around the CDS, DVDS and Games, we finally left the shop empty handed.

The last shop we decided to visit was Waterstones. While I had no money left after bus faire, pick and mix and a DS game (I didn’t have much with me in the first place) I did find two books I really wanted which I mentally added to a list, to look up later. He didn’t find anything he was after and vaguely trailed me the entire time we were in the shop. It was kind of sweet. We both agreed that we’re glad the other person likes books and video games as it keeps things interesting, conversation wise.

With just under an hour left until the movie started, we headed back to the beach. We skipped rocks, drew faces on other rocks with chalks, tried to make the biggest splash by throwing things into the ocean, inspected our games and just in general messed around. It doesn’t sound very fun but I promise you it was. It was nice to just let go and enjoy each others company.

Finally with fifteen minutes left till the movie began, we went to the cinema, bought our tickets and headed into the Foyer. Even though we had previously agreed not to buy anything at the cinema, He ended up buying a medium bucket of sweet popcorn to split between us. It was mostly gone by the time the movie began.

The cinema was practically bursting at the seams with the number of preteen girls crowded into the room, each desperate to get as close as possible to the screen. It was the most full i’d seen the cinema… ever. However, it was the first day the movie was being shown at this particular cinema, so it was to be expected.

The actual movie itself was really, really good. He doesn’t usually like romancey films but even he agreed it was pretty good. However, neither of us cried. Secretly though I reckon I would have cried if I was by myself or with my friends, but oh well. This meant there was no need for an ‘after’ shot of us as we looked exactly the same. The other girls in the cinema all visibly were crying.. they also all gasped loudly when the main love interest came onto the screen and even squealed when he kissed the other protagonist.

We ate an insane amount of popcorn, sweets and other food that day. I dropped my nearly empty pint of sweets in the cinema but I take that as a sign that I should have stopped eating them! Not exactly productive to my non-diet diet. Especially as i’ve been eating a lot of junk food lately – and I don’t like it. Oh well, i’ll try and eat as healthily as possible after Tuesday. (Final exam so we’re all celebrating with bad food, but i’m going to limit myself a lot more.)

We took the bus back to mine, and then he insisted on walking me home. I dumped my stuff off and essentially walked him back to the bus stop and waited with him. However due to some work being done on the roads, the bus was extremely late so I couldn’t sit and wait with him as much as i’d have liked. Once I was home, I got a panicky call from Him essentially saying he’d lost his bus pass so he couldn’t get home. After practically tearing my room apart with the assistance of my mother, he called back saying he’d found it in his bag.

Oh well.

This weekend, my father took my brother and I out in our motor home to go to Bunn Leisure. We got back early today and the weather was amazing. It was the summer solstice and it was also felt like the hottest day of the year. We could only stay for one night so we had to make the most of it.

We spent the day relaxing in the sun, eating out, eating the cakes described at the top of the entry (they turned out really well surprisingly!), reading, going to the beach, eating icecream, going to the arcade, swimming, doing over an hours worth of walking, watching a Black Eyed Peas tribute, and we even saw a Doctor and The Medics liveshow. All in twenty four hours. We got home really late that evening and essentially went straight to bed. It was certainly a fun day but it was also exhausting.

Even though I applied suncream all over my body three times through out the day I STILL ended up with sunburnt shoulders. It isn’t fair. Really hurts but oh well. I KNOW I covered both shoulders each time but apparently I didn’t do a good enough job at it.

My national insurance number turned up this week too! I am officially a person that is recognized by the government! Knowing my luck though, i’ll loose it. I hope not though – that’d get messy.

My last GCSE exam ever (hopefully) is on Tuesday! I’m so excited. God knows what i’m going to do once i’m completely finished with school though..

Well that’s my life since the last entry. It’s certainly been busy.

Until next time!

I love the summer

Published August 13, 2012 by thatstrangegirls

Hey everyone,

Two days ago, I came back from my 5 day holiday to Cornwall – and I loved it! It didn’t rain, very out-of-character for Cornwall. We stayed in Maisie Motorhome (the OFFICIAL name of dad’s Motorhome) outside my Uncle Paul and My Auntie Jenny’s house. At first, I felt really awkward there, like I didn’t belong, but after a few days it felt like a second home!

On the way there we picked up my cousin Chris, who brought bags full of sweets and other sugary things to munch on for the five hour journey.  When we got there, my 19-y/o cousin Nicola was sprawled out on the sofa, Uncle Paul was outside feeding the chickens (he doesn’t live on a farm, he just owns chickens) and auntie Jenny was in the kitchen cooking Pizza.

We watched movies for the rest of the night and went to bed.

The following day, nat, dad and I went to Gwithian Beach. Nathan sat there, attempting to crab. me attempting to get a tan and dad taking pictures. Afterwards we went to go get an ice cream and into town to get a birthday card and a present for my Gran – the actual reason we were in cornwall – afterwards, we went and bought a Cornish Pasty and nibbled at those on the drive back to our uncle and aunt’s.

The following evening, it was my Grans birthday. Dad set off the motorhome alarm as we were getting in and it didn’t stop for a full twenty minutes. Me and Nathan were in stitches. Eventually, it stopped and we were on our way.

We’re all eating at a Chinese buffet-like place with 20 odd people at our table – all of them relatives! It was a really nice evening chatting, eating and laughing with family I haven’t seen in what felt like forever. The only three people missing were my auntie Leanne and cousins Ethan and Dylan – who sadly couldn’t make it due to some ‘circumstances’ nobody would tell me.  We all then went home and while my brother was on the Xbox, and the older family members were getting drunk as hell, my cousin Nicola, and I, were talking for hours about… anything , really. We chatted about, Jobs, university, her friends, music, concerts, my friends, books, movies, animals, anime, family, the evening and what we were doing tomorrow.

The following day, all the boys had decided that they were gonna go fishing, while my cousins Nicola and I went into Truro shopping. I had no problems with this, I had 30 quid in my bag left of birthday money, and the 15 pound dad gave me. The day went like this: My uncle Paul gave us a lift into Truro, and then went back. We checked bus times so we knew what time to be back by, and then went into the nearest little market-y place. There were tons of stalls but the only thing we actually bought was a surprisingly cheap pic-and-mix. After that, we went into Waterstones, where I bought two books. There was a really chatty and friendly cashier who was sporting a Mockingjay (the hunger games) pin, and numerous over badges. Nicola bought three books – one of them a baby book for her niece (and my second cousin) Robyn. Then into WHSmith (yes lots of book shops) which was actually pretty crap. Everyone at there seemed to be staring at us and it was really weird. Still, we both bought two more books then were on our way. Next stop was boots (I bought eyeliner. Me. EYELINER. I was surprised that I wanted it, and Nicola said she’d show me how to put it on.) and a bottle of perfume. Then we went into a shop called LUSH where a really weird lady (she obviously worked there) said ‘would you like to try our glittery soap? it’s free!” ”Uh… sure?” ”Good!” she grabbed my arm and lathered it in a really gross feeling concution that she then rubbed in to my skin, covering it in golden glitter. I’ll admit, it smelt nice. She did it with both arms, and my cousin got roped into having it done too.

We then stopped and had lunch at Subway (never eaten there, so THAT confused me.) Where a 40-odd woman with a seven year old daughter was yelling about how the drinks machine wasn’t fizzy, even though her daughter was insisting it was. It was quite amusing to watch. We sat down, ate and chatted some more. Then we went into Next (oohing and ahhing at the Thorntons not too far away with a chocolate fountain in the window!) where Nicola bought some more stuff for Robyn, and we took the mickey out of the ‘fashionable’ clothes. Again, a really friendly cashier. Every place we’d been in (other than WHSmith’s) had really friendly staff, we were joking about how the bus driver was bound to be a moody old cow as we strolled over to a bus stop and waited for the bus to arrive. And we were proven wrong! The bus driver was a friendly young man with curly brown hair and green eyes. On the way back we talked about her uni course to do with animals while munching on the Pic-and-mix sweets we bought. When we got back, (nearly missing our stop) we watched Moulin Rouge, and as it finished, the boys all strolled past, grumbling about how they didn’t catch anything (although Nathan nearly whacked dad with his fishing rod!)

The following evening, My cousin Becki, her husband Terri and their daughter Robyn came down to visit, followed by a huge barbeque. It was a really nice evening all in all.

The next day, we had to go home.  It was really sad. I’d miss Cornwall. I always do!

When I came home, I arrived to tons of lovey-dovey messages from him. A message from one of my friends to ‘Hurry up and get home’ and another one telling me about how they had dyed their hair brown in my absence.

and that was my time away!

Farewell for now,

-Megan
