World Book Day

Published March 6, 2015 by thatstrangegirls

Hey,

So yesterday was World Book Day. For those who do not know, this is a day that celebrates authors, illustrators, book and reading. It is also used as a time to fundraise for school libraries through book fairs. The portion of money the school receives from sales at the book faire can then help fund for more books!

Every year my school lets us all dress up as book characters but usually nobody does. So to this year I decided i’m finally confident enough not to really care what people think so I dressed up! I dressed up as Wilbur the black cat from this.My friend joined me in dressing up as a white rabbit from Alice in Wonderland. In the pictures you can’t really see but I have cat ears, a ‘cat face’ painted on, a mostly plain black dress, black nails and cat tights on!

The rest of the school seemed to be having the same idea as a lot of people dressed up – there were Pikachus, the Dr from Jekyl and Hyde, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, the brothers from Of Mice and Men, the Pink Panther, Link from the Legend of Zelda Manga, James Bond, Pocahontas, the Pink Panther, two Indian Gods, Wally from the Wheres Wally? books and so many other characters. It was a genuinely nice surprise to see so many people dressing up and taking part.

Books are such a big part of who I am and I haven’t been as excited as I was this day in a little while (sad, I know). I was even more excited when I got early access to the book faire due to stress from mock ISAs and whatnot.

What colour is it?

Published February 27, 2015 by thatstrangegirls

Hey,

I know this isn’t exactly a post about my day-to-day teenage years, but an internet phenomenon has occurred.

So overnight the world moved on from making jokes about auditioning for musical roles to obsessing over the colour of a dress. The world seems utterly split on whether it is white and gold or black and blue and even lead to it trending on Twitter! It even led to a giant group debate on Facebook between many of my friends. Many were claiming to see just one set of  colours while others claimed to have the colour they see change.

This debate carried on into college and actually led to discussion of the dress being banned outright by the head of sixth form as we were spending too much time discussing it and not enough working.

The #blackandblue and #whiteandgold hashtags started to trend early last evening and are still trending now as I am writing this! This hashtag emerged after a photo of the dress emerged onto social media websites such as Tumblr and Facebook with the question ‘Help settle a debate! What colour is this?’

Suddenly the world went mad. Millions were claiming the dress was black and blue, with another million claiming it was white and gold! The internet sure is a strange place.

Many theories emerged from this as to why the colours change. These theories ranged from eye sensitivity, cones in your eyes, theories ranging from the hunter gatherer day or the colour you saw varied depending on how stressed you are!

But fear not, friends. This question has been solved by the team at ASAPscience! Can we do something more productive now?

Until next time,

Fourth Times’ The Charm

Published May 31, 2014 by thatstrangegirls

Hey,

So  lot has happened lately.

Last weekend I explored Arundel Castle with my Dad and younger brother. While we were not allowed to take pictures inside, my favourite part of the castle was easily the two story library! It was very wooden and beautiful. The books inside appeared to all be very dull (encyclopedia’s and whatnot) but the place certainly had charm. We then had a picnic and watched a joust between two people dressed up in clothes appropriate for the sixteenth era. They then went over the history of various weapon that were used in England. Overall, it was a very fun afternoon and i’d probably go again –  even if my ears were ringing after the amount of canons I heard go off.

I’ve been going to a lot of revision sessions. I have two Maths exams, two Film studies exams, and English exam and a History Of Surgery. The revision sessions themselves have been really helpful, and i’m glad I went. The teachers essentially went over certain parts of the course a lot of people struggled with, and we revised them. It wasn’t as bad as i’d been expecting.

I went prom dress shopping today, and even got the dress! I won’t give away any details, other than the fact that it is red and is being personalised slightly.

We actually attempted to go into town at eleven o’clock. We originally wanted to go to a shop in Portsmouth but found that it was too far to drive – even if they did have pretty dresses. However when we were nearly in town, the car started leaking water and overheating massively, so we had to go home. This was my third attempt at prom dress shopping so I was really disappointed.

We went home and had some lunch while Mum called a mechanic. The price for the repair was too expensive so she just sighed and said we’ll save up for it. Meanwhile, we couldn’t go shopping.

However, Mum’s boyfriend volunteered to drive us into town and drop us off. He’d also pick us up when we were done. After lots of thank you’s we set off.

After we set off into town, we went to what we thought would be the most useless shop, just to get it out of the way but to still have a look. It was a bridal shop and despite the pretty bridesmaids dresses in the window, it didn’t have any prom dresses.

We set off to our second shop of choice that was down one of the lanes. Immediately I was overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of dresses. There were dresses of all sizes, colours and types. Mum picked out a Cinderella type blue ball gown and I picked out a plain red dress to try on. Both needed a few alterations with pins to fit but once on they both felt so comfortable and pretty that I almost couldn’t bare to take either off. The blue dress definitely had the ‘wow’ factor, but the red dress, with some changes had promise.

We decided to venture into the other two shops on our list, have me try on some different ones, take pictures of me in each one and then pick over tea.

The next shop we went into was a lot smaller but still had a lot of selection… just not really in my size. The dresses I tried of ranged from dark blue to red to pink. A lot of the dresses were very pretty but they either didn’t fit well (even with pins), the material felt uncomfortable or I just disliked the dress in general. The staff inside was very lovely and the dresses very cheap… but the dresses weren’t me.

We decided to venture to the last shop but actually couldn’t find it. After walking around the seafront and exploring some of the lanes, we gave up and got a cup of tea and a cookie each. We looked at each of the pictures and decided on THE one.

On our walk back to the shop, we discovered it was very busy and decided to come back in half an hour. While we waited we did some  grocery shopping. When we walked into the shop again, we tried on the red dress one more time, got the alterations needed recorded and then paid in full. Even with the cost of the dress and the alterations that need to be done, I still have enough money for shoes! I’m very excited.

I can go try it on a final time and pick it up in two-three weeks. I’n so excited!

My final exams are drawing closer… the only exams i’m truly worried about are maths as I need a C. But with a bit of luck, I should pass. Here’s hoping!

Until next time!

Lots has happened!

Hey,

I have been told I need maths intervention. I’m so awful at maths I need extra help. Oh well, i’m not too fussed about the help. I’ll go and try to work hard. It’s the only lesson i’m not doing well in. So, I know what I have to revise. He has offered to help though, which is good. I’m slightly sceptical as to how much work we’d actually both end up doing. By past experiences, we’d revise for half an hour and then just mess around. Who knows though, right?

So recently a lot of things have happened. On the 18th I went round His house all day. We spent the day relaxing together, watching movies and tickling each other. It was a fun day. It was my second time round his his house ever and he actually tidied up more this time than he did the first time I went round!

I’ve decided on the type of prom dress I want! I want it to be a long, red dress with straps. However as i’m short, I have to try them on before I can buy them. So i’ve gotta save up to go out into town with mum. I’ll probably start saving up the most after His birthday as most of my money is going towards that at the moment. I had a really good idea as to what to get him, but apparently his friend is giving him the game to him for free. Now I have to come up with three new decent presents and order them by mid February. Aaaah.

I got my exam time table last week! For my REAL LIFE GCSEs! I’ve already done two GCSEs but they were easy – I didn’t have to go through SIXTEEN exams for them though! So nervous about it all though. It’s scary. This effects my future! My earliest exam is in May – so not even that far away. My final exam is the 25th of June. I also got my Mock exam results – I got A*-C in everything except Maths, where I got an E.

On the 19th, i went into Brighton for a girl’s day out with five other girls. We got the train there and were in town until four pm.

On the train, one of my friends pressed the button to shut the train door just as a man walked through it. He got trapped but quickly got through. My friend was so embarrassed she was a laughing pile on the floor.

We eventually got off the train and after a slight trek, found a KFC to have our lunch in. After this we explored all the weird and wonderful shops Brighton has to offer such as Cyber Candy, Snoopers Paradise and New Feel it. We didn’t buy stuff at a lot of the shops but they were fun to poke around in. I definitely would go again! After a slight detour to Waterstones where I bought To Kill a Mockingbird, we went to the pier and chilled out there. We ended up unintentionally splitting up into two groups. One group with the most money went to the arcade  and the other split off to get icecream.

After trying to find each other, we regrouped and walked back to the train station to catch the train back. However one of my friends had been feeling ill all day and had thrown up in public. After a quick tidy up, we were on our way.

The train ride back was fairly uneventful, besides some smoking 13 year olds freaking out when my friend started blowing bubbles. That was… interesting.

Until next time!
